On May 7-9, Thomson Healthcare hosted the 23rd annual provider client conference at The Venetian in Las Vegas. The 2007 Insight Conference, "Navigating the Course to Superior Performance," attracted hundreds of healthcare professionals interested in learning about new products and services, networking with peers, and sharing ideas on best practices. For the first time, Thomson Healthcare brought together clients from Medstat and Solucient at this annual event, the first conference since the acquisition of Solucient by The Thomson Corporation.

Conference attendees heard from a compelling General Session line-up of acclaimed keynote speakers. Through his humor and humility, Lou Holtz, the celebrated football coach and ESPN analyst, inspired each member of the audience to be a leader by having a vision, leading by example, and holding people accountable. Sharing examples from his coaching days, Holtz explained to his listeners that a positive attitude, the passion to succeed, teamwork, and the need to dream, all breed success.

Mark McClellan, M.P.A., M.D., Ph.D., former administrator of CMS and a leader in healthcare reform, instructed his audience on the need for bold reforms that will lead to change. McClellan encouraged the audience to address the root causes of frustration in healthcare, and to stop thinking about healthcare in the traditional way. He discussed the need to promote health, wellness, and prevention. One of the challenges he noted is aligning healthcare reform with healthcare policies. According to McClellan, successful initiatives in healthcare delivery reform will minimize the need to reduce costs by reducing the quality of care.

In addition, Bill Taylor, co-author, Mavericks at Work, and founding editor, Fast Company magazine, presented a lively discussion that provided new answers to basic questions in business: how to create a winning competitive strategy with growing competition, how to engage with customers, and how to attract the best talent in the field. Sharing real-life examples from his interviews with leaders from some of today's most successful companies, Taylor reminded attendees that the best way to predict the future is to invent it. Taylor challenged the audience to rethink the business they are in, to make the organization more memorable to do business with, and to tap the hidden genius inside the organization for great ideas.

The audience was fascinated by the data and research presented by Kaveh Safavi, M.D., J.D., chief medical officer, Center for Healthcare Improvement, Thomson Healthcare. Safavi shared an insightful look into the emerging trends in hospital services. With hospital and healthcare leaders operating in a constantly changing environment, Safavi advised his listeners that awareness and an understanding of such changes will enhance their ability to prepare.

The conference concluded with the third annual Insight Awards dinner where 11 hospitals were recognized for excellence in performance improvement.
