Insight: Sample study summary: Co-Nurse Manager Model
A pilot study on the feasibility of a co-nurse manager model and its impact on organizational and direct
nursing labor costs showed that shared responsibility can be effective. The study, as reported by Carroll et al
in 2004, considered a model in which two managers share responsibilities for a single unit.
Both managers work 36 to 40 hours per week, with duties that include late afternoon and early evening
coverage. During the pilot program, not only did nursing staff turnover decline, but there was also a net cost
savings in comparison to traditional management models. The authors observe that this program illustrates
how survival in today's difficult healthcare market requires innovative, out-of-the-box thinking.
